Crown Surface
Integrity Standards
Authentication • Transparency • Preservation
At Crown Grading, preserving the integrity of collectibles is one of our highest priorities. Our grading process is designed to reward authentic condition while maintaining transparency and long-term trust within the hobby. This policy helps collectors understand the difference between acceptable cleaning methods and alterations that may artificially improve a card’s appearance.
Preservation vs. Alteration
Crown recognizes that collectors may carefully remove loose debris or contaminants from cards prior to submission. Preservation methods intended solely to remove surface debris without modifying the original card surface are generally considered acceptable.
✓ Acceptable Preservation & Cleaning
These methods must not alter the gloss, texture, reflectivity, coloration, print layer, or structural integrity of the card.
Prohibited Surface Alteration Methods
Crown considers any process intended to improve, restore, conceal, or artificially enhance the appearance of a card’s surface to be alteration. Any process that modifies the original surface characteristics may result in an altered designation.
✕ Prohibited Methods Include, But Are Not Limited To:
Intent to Conceal Wear
Crown evaluates both the observable result and the apparent intent of the treatment process.
Methods intended to:
…may be classified as surface alteration regardless of the specific materials or techniques used.
Natural Aging & Factory Variance
Natural Surface Aging
Crown recognizes that natural aging, factory variance, print lines, original manufacturing inconsistencies, and normal material aging are inherent characteristics of many collectibles. Natural aging alone does not constitute alteration.
Factory & Manufacturer Variance
Certain manufacturing processes may produce:
These characteristics are evaluated separately from post-production alteration.
Why Surface Alteration Matters
Certain chemical products and restoration methods can artificially improve a card’s visual appearance. While some alterations may appear minor to the naked eye, even subtle modifications can impact market transparency, collector trust, and long-term authenticity standards.
Surface alteration methods may:
Crown believes collectors deserve clear disclosure regarding any evidence of artificial surface enhancement or restoration.
Crown Surface Review Process
Crown utilizes a combination of advanced tools and expert human verification to evaluate card surfaces for potential alteration, restoration, or enhancement.
Not all alterations are detectable, and Crown does not guarantee the identification of every modified surface. Our review process is designed to identify inconsistencies commonly associated with known enhancement methods.
Potential Designations
Cards exhibiting evidence of surface modification, restoration, or artificial enhancement may receive designations. Decisions are made at Crown’s sole discretion based on observed characteristics during the grading process.
Evolving Standards & Detection
As restoration technologies and enhancement methods evolve, Crown reserves the right to update its standards, review processes, and designation criteria in order to preserve grading integrity and market transparency.
